Every fall, as the leaves begin their vivid transformation and the air hints at the crispness of the approaching winter, there's a tradition I hold dear. A tradition that is more than just a photoshoot—it's a testament to the enduring bond of friendship and the beautiful evolution of a family.
For many years now, I've had the privilege of photographing a family that is very close to my heart. Kimiko the mother of this delightful clan is none other than one of my dearest childhood friends. Through the lens of my camera, I've watched her journey from a young girl with dreams to a strong, loving wife and mother of two radiant daughters.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of this annual ritual is witnessing the palpable connection between my friend and her husband. From the very beginning, I've been privileged to be a part of their love story. I still fondly remember witnessing their wedding—a day filled with promises, hopes, and dreams. Our very first family photoshoot wasn’t just any shoot; it was their maternity photos as they awaited the arrival of their first child. It's been an incredible experience watching their relationship evolve. From being doting newlyweds to nurturing parents, their bond has only deepened with time.
Another beautiful facet of these shoots is the chance to reconnect with Kimiko's mom, who I've known since my childhood. These sessions aren’t just about the immediate family but also about the larger tapestry of relationships that weave a family together. Catching up with her, hearing tales of yesteryears, and sharing updates on life’s happenings brings a sense of nostalgia and warmth. This year my husband tagged along and Chatted with her learning things I never knew about her.
It's not just a photoshoot; it's a gathering of souls, a celebration of relationships that have grown and evolved, just like the changing seasons.
The annual fall photoshoot isn't just a job for me; it's a reunion, a walk down memory lane, and a reminder of the preciousness of time. Every year, we choose a location that speaks to the family's current chapter. Sometimes it's a park, awash with the golden hues of fall, and at other times, it's a cozy nook in their home. No matter the backdrop, the essence remains unchanged: a family rooted in love and laughter.
Photographing children, especially ones you've watched grow from infancy, is a unique experience. I've captured their first steps, their first days of school, and their playful summer afternoons. Seeing the world through their eyes, full of wonder and innocence, has taught me to appreciate the smaller details of life. Their infectious giggles, the way their eyes light up at the sight of a falling leaf, and their unscripted moments of affection towards their mother—these are the moments I cherish most.
Editing this session years always brings happy tears and emotions!, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for friendships that stand the test of time, for the opportunity to watch families grow, and for the privilege of capturing these moments. Here's to many more fall photoshoots and the timeless memories they bring.
