Today was the day! I gave my rookie sketch at Rotary. Being a fairly new member I had no idea what one looked like :) Also I am terrified to speak in public, one of the reasons that I joined Rotary is to get over this!
I had an outline- 5 mins
Talk about me
My childhood
Education
Family
Career
How do cram all of that into 5 mins? I did it, it may have cost a few tears this week running down memory lane. But I did it!
Would you like to read my notes....?
Hello
For those of you that don’t me I am Sheila Johnson, newish member.
Im going to share a little about myself
I grew up in Sebastopol. On my grandparents little farm on the south end of town. I was the oldest of 3 children and very much in charge from the beginning. I may have been called bossy, I call it leadership.
From the time we were old enough to count back change, we were working in Farmers markets.
Early morning, long days in the garden, butcher room and canning fruits & veggies all summer.
I now have an appreciation for all of the hard work, growing up on a farm taught me, I feel like I had a magical childhood. Sorry thats the sebastopol hippy in me.
When I was 15 I met my future husband. We did things a little out of order, got married had our oldest son Alishua and then graduated from Analy high school. Im 18 years old 9 months pregnant in this photo
We went on to have 4 more children.
Kerr jr, Kylie, Kyle and the baby Avery.
I could talk about them all day, they are my greatest accomplishment.
Another accomplishment that I am proud of is 27 years with this guy.
Because of him I was able to stay home, and raise our children.
When the children were little we coached, went on every field trip and sat on every board from sports to school.
Sometimes I just felt like a taxi but I am forever grateful for that time.
While having all of this fun one constent was my camera in my hand!
Everything we did I photographed! I spent hours online after the kids went to bed, learning how to take the best pictures and how to use my equipment.
In 2014 I joined the PPWC , it launched my career. This is where I met the infamous Harvey Henningson. Who is a mentor and legend all in one. My career was slow and steady at first.
I was still very active on the booster board for 9 years at Analy and had 5 children that were still needing to be picked up dropped off to school and sports activities. Feed. I used to make 10 sandwiches every morning one for lunch and one for after school activities. Here I got pretty heavily involved in what they were doing I started photographing the girls basketball team which lead to the boys and then the football team, then prom, then prom for other schools. I played a little too hard and ended up with a thriving business.
One by one they started driving, going off to collage and they started needing less of my time. I was able to play little more with my photography friends.
When I say played I mean I was taking classes, workshops, conferences. Learning all the ends and outs of running a photography business.
Now I have figured out what I really love to photograph, weddings High school seniors, families
I team up with local wineries and offer their members family sessions.
And learning more about our community through the cover stories for Sebastopol lIving magazine.
I also love photographing headshots.
This was a highlight of my career.
When the kids all graduated I took a step back from all the years of volunteering,
the time off was great, but I had just started looking into service clubs when Harvy asked me about Rotary.
It sounded like the perfect fit. I am really excited about volunteering and spending time with this community
This last photo is the most current of my family
Looking at it everyday reminds me that
I am a blessed girl to get to live in work in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
If you've made it this far Thank you! :)
This truly was a fun little summery of my life so far! I really look forward to expanding this, and improving my public speaking skills. And hopefully soon sharing all of the fun Im having volunteering in the community with Rotary!
xoxo,
Sheila
